Growing in a Forest Classroom

Our homeschool tutorial provides children age 3-11 nature immersion experiences from September through May.

FORESTtutorial adventures are foundational to higher level learning and will:

  • inspire creative thinking

  • foster emotional regulation

  • challenge mind & body

  • encourage social connection

  • build confidence, self-esteem & resilience

FORESTtutorials are geared toward the developmental age group of the children. Our mission is to nurture children through nature and help foster every child's imagination, confidence, self-reliance, compassion, resilience, and care for self others and the environment.

At River's Edge our teaching method is distinguished by the combination of an entirely outdoor classroom, interest-led flow learning, inquiry-based teaching style, child-inspired emergent curriculum and most importantly play. Our educational philosophy is that there are no pre-determined lesson plans, learning arises organically from what nature presents and from the children's discoveries and imagination.

We are not bound to time during FORESTtutorial, but do maintain a familiar daily rhythm to provide a safe, grounding, and general structure from which the children freely play. As children spend time in the same forest classroom each week they develop a sense of connectedness, mastery of environment, and awareness of changes in the forest. This awareness of seasonal and weather changes leads to great child-led, impromptu experiences. Our goals are to tap into a child's sense of wonder about nature and to give them the opportunity to freely explore with all their senses.

Our highly trained guides are experienced in child development and environmental education which brings a unique opportunity for learning and exploring to your child as well as developmental understanding and observations of each child's learning and experience to the parents.

Children experience their world through play! Every experience engages the mind, body and all the senses to create a whole body experience unequaled in any other format than nature. At River's Edge our goal and mission is to nurture children through nature and this explorer's program will not fall short of expectations.

The forest transforms into a meaningful laboratory of self discovery and play. REFP Guides will explore the forest with your child as it transforms and changes in every season.

Children will develop resiliency, confidence, and courage as they adventure! Climb a tree, build a shelter, dig up salamanders and investigate fungus while learning about yourself, your peers and your relationship to nature!

Nature offers a natural pallet to any child's imagination as well as a sense of peace and calm in every season. Children will engage with nature and their friends through mindfulness practices, art expression and eco-exploration to develop a sense of inner calm and strength.

Nature has been inspiring children through its majesty, resiliency, and peace for generations. Your child will reconnect with nature through artful expression, yoga, sensory integration,  and more. Children will also document the beauty around them through art projects and nature journaling while developing emotional awareness and regulation.

Art, the wonder of it all.

Nature offers a safe and secure haven for everyone and it can be challenging and risky if you are not prepared. Survival skills are so important in any situation and living the life of a pioneer is exciting and fun for children. Not to mention invaluable!

Children will learn to safely build and start a fire, to find water and purify it for drinking, how to build a shelter and stay dry and warm, and how to forage for edible food. They will learn to use a compass and understand mapping. Most importantly they will learn the life of a tribe building community and support for each other.

Learning to survive is deeply empowering for children.

Nature offers a fantastic platform for kids to explore the world - they are naturally curious and it is always alive and changing. Children love feeling new textures, sorting and matching, identifying living creatures in their environment and getting messy. Science is everywhere in the natural environment.

Children will learn to identify the different trees and forest floor plants in our forest. They will explore the different stages of life in the creek as well as learn what happens to the soil when it rains hard and how a decomposing tree benefits the forest and all it's creatures.

Science is fun and engaging when learned in a natural environment while playing.

A nature immersion program designed to nurture children through nature play.
